Easy UiB out-of-office journal access

With so many journal articles unavailable (unless you pay an extortionate fee) when working anywhere but in the office, it can be frustrating working at home, on the train, or at Finse. Yes, there is the UiB VPN, but this is slow and falls over frequently, and depends on the router being set up correctly to avoid a 619-error.

There is an easy alternative to the VPN. Once you have found a paper you want to read, for example:

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0277379111000746

simply insert “.pva.uib.no” between the host name and path

http://www.sciencedirect.com.pva.uib.no/science/article/pii/S0277379111000746

This will take you to a page asking for your UiB username and password (obviously if you don’t have one you should apply for our Master’s programme — you have until the 15th April), before taking you to the article you want to read.

This seems to be much easier to use than the VPN.
